People Want to Buy Into You, Not From You !

People Want to Buy Into You , Not From You !

Most people will tell you that the first step of service is to give a warm welcome, or a warm and sincere greeting. Well, I would argue that the first step of service is actually before that which is to be eager to serve. Before you open your mouth, before you say anything, the first step is to show through your body language, through your energy, through your posture that I am at your service. I am ready for you. I’m ready to take care of you and I’m excited about this opportunity. So if you’re eager to serve the first thing is you should be in ready position, the same way as professional athletes re prepared.

There is a certain position, or a certain stance that shows that I’m here, and I’m ready for action. Same thing for you, what do you look like? Are your hands at your sides, are they crossed or are they folded? If someone walked into your office, and you’re on the computer do you continue working on the computer or do you stop, turn, face the person and give him or her eye contact and smile? All of that is part of the ready position. So identify what yours is.

Secondly, there is something called the ten feet, five feet rule. If I’m within ten feet of you I should at least acknowledge that you’re alive. I should at least see you; give eye contact, smile, something. Now if I’m within five feet what should I do? Well, I should engage with you, I should say, “Hello, how are you, how can I be of service?” Whatever’s most appropriate for your culture? For example if we are in an elevator together, we will be within five feet, which means it’s a crime for me not to say something.

If I’m going up the stairs, and you’re coming down the stairs unless we have the world’s widest stairs we are within five feet, which means it’s unconstitutional for me not to say something to you. If I’m walking down the hallway, and you’re walking down the other side of the same hallway chances are we are within five feet of each other, or at least ten feet. There should be some interaction. So you should constantly be looking or actively trying to search for ways to create engagement. That is the true essence of being eager to serve.
